An evergreen tree of the Sapindaceae family (APG classification: Sapindaceae), native to Africa, and an upright tall tree. The number of chromosomes is 2 n = 32. The leaves are even-pinnately compound, with 3-4 pairs, and the leaflets are obovate-oblong, glabrous, 10-odd centimeters long, entire, with a pointed tip and a wedge-shaped base. The flowers are whitish-green and grow in racemes 7-10 centimeters long. The fruit is a three-lobed capsule, 6 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide, egg-shaped. It ripens pink-red, splits into three parts, and each lobe contains one oblong seed with a white aril at the base. The aril can be eaten raw or fried in oil. The unripe fruit is poisonous. It is also often used as a roadside tree, and perfume is extracted from the flowers. It is common in West India. It is commonly eaten in Jamaica.
