Kuǎi Xiáng (English spelling)

A native of Wu County (Jiangsu Province) during the Ming Dynasty in China. Originally a craftsman belonging to the Xiangshan Bang (trade guild) in Suzhou, he later participated in the construction of the palace in Beijing and was appointed as an official, becoming a Minister of Works. He was responsible for the construction of the Beijing palace in 1417 (Yongle 15) during the Zhengtong era (1436-49), Longfu Temple in 1453 (Jingtai 4), the Xiyuan buildings in 1460 (Tianshun 4), and the Yuling Tomb, one of the thirteen tombs of the Ming Dynasty, in 1464. He was renowned for his precise designs and repairs, and was nicknamed Kuai Luban, in reference to the master craftsmen of the Spring and Autumn period. [Tanaka Tan]

中国，明代，呉県(江蘇省)の人。もとは蘇州の香山幇(同業組合)所属の工匠で，のち北京の宮殿の造営に参画して任官し，工部侍郎となる。1417年(永楽15)，正統年間(1436‐49)に北京の宮殿，53年(景泰4)に隆福寺，60年(天順4)に西苑の各館，64年に明の十三陵の一つ，裕陵の建設などを担当。寸分違わぬ設計や修理に定評があり，春秋時代の名匠になぞらえて蒯魯般と呼ばれた。【田中淡】
