Iwaya Shoten

…Cigarettes that did not require a cigarette holder became especially popular. It is said that Tsuchida Yasugoro of Tokyo was the first to take advantage of this trend and produced domestically produced cigarettes in 1872, but it was Iwatani Matsudaira who popularized cigarettes with a cigarette holder in Japan. He opened Iwatani Shoten in Tokyo's Ginza district in 1884 and began selling the Tengu-jirushi cigarette with flashy advertising that surprised the public. Chiba Shoten, also in Tokyo, introduced the Botan-jirushi cigarette the following year. …
