A French deposit bank. It is one of the four major deposit banks in France, along with Crédit Lyonnais, the Bank of Commerce and Industry, and the Banque National de Paris (the successor to the Banque de Paris Discount Bank). Its head office is in Paris. It was founded in Paris in 1864 by influential Parisian bankers and industrialists who were in conflict with Crédit Mobilier, as a "mixed bank" that would handle all financial activities, including long-term industrial financing, in addition to regular banking. From the beginning, the bank actively opened branches and offices in Paris and the provinces, and by 1970 it had opened 47 branches, becoming the first French bank to complete a nationwide branch network.Societe Generale [Société générale de Belgique]Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
