In a narrow sense, the North Pole is the northernmost point of the earth's axis, located at 90° north latitude. In a broader sense, it refers to the Arctic region, which is centered on the Arctic Ocean, including the northern borders of the Eurasian and North American continents, and Greenland. The English word Arctic comes from the Greek word arktikos (northern), and refers to the area under the constellation arktos (present-day Ursa Major) in the northern sky.
