Epic Theater

Epic Theater
A theory of drama proposed by E. Piscator and continued by B. Brecht, who developed it independently. Drama appeals to reason rather than emotion. Since Aristotle, the concept of drama has been empathy, and it has been designed with the intention of assimilating the audience to the actions or characters in the play. In contrast, narrative drama is based on reflection on the uncertainty of emotions and aims to alienate the audience rather than assimilate them. In narrative drama, fragments of reality or facts are presented on stage, and the audience thinks and judges while objectively alienating those facts. Dramatic illusions to make the stage look realistic are rejected, and actors are required to view the characters objectively within the whole play and to consciously and critically grasp them, rather than simply becoming their characters. The stage set is very simple, and the situation is objectively explained using screens, placards, or ballad-like songs, preventing the audience from assimilating and achieving an alienation effect.
