Night Flight - Vol de Nuit

A novel by French novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Published in 1931. One stormy night, a mail transport plane is returning to Buenos Aires Airport. The pilot, Fabian, desperately tries to contact the base. The altitude has already fallen to 500 meters, and the plane has finally escaped the mountains and reached the sea, but it only has 30 minutes of fuel left. Fabian, even as he faces death, continues to think about happiness on earth and personal happiness in everyday life. Meanwhile, Fabian's best friend, the base manager, Rivière, inquires at each base about whether Fabian's plane has made an emergency landing, and while struggling to confirm whether his best friend is alive or dead, he must also worry about solidarity with the people at each base and the fate of the aviation industry. This is his morality and belief as a person acting in society. Therefore, he must overcome his personal mourning and grief for Fabian's death in the disaster and give the order to take off again to other planes. He must once again expose the other pilots to the risk of death. This is a speculative novel that pursues what André Gide calls in his preface, "the fact that human happiness lies not in freedom but in the acceptance of duties," through courageous actions that are a clear proof of human dignity.

フランスの小説家アントアーヌ・ド・サン・テグジュペリの小説。1931年刊。ある暴風雨の夜、ブエノス・アイレス空港に帰ろうとしている郵便輸送機がある。パイロットのファビアンは必死に基地と連絡をとろうとする。高度はすでに500メートルに落ち、やっと山地を逃れて海に出たが、燃料はあと30分しかない。ファビアンは死と直面しながらの行動のなかでも、なお地上の幸せ、日常生活における個人的幸福を思索する。一方、ファビアンの親友で、基地の主任リビエールは、ファビアン機の不時着の有無を各基地に問い合わせ、親友の生死の確認に苦慮しながらも、各基地の人間との連帯や航空事業の命運に心を砕かねばならない。それが社会のなかで行動する人間としての彼のモラルであり信念なのだ。だから彼は、結局遭難死したファビアンに対する個人的哀悼や悲しみを乗り越えて、ふたたび他の飛行機に発進命令を出さねばならない。ほかのパイロットたちをまたも死の危険にさらさねばならない。アンドレ・ジッドの序文でいう「人間の幸福は自由のなかにあるのではなく、義務の甘受のなかにあるという事実」を、人間の尊厳の明証たる勇気ある行動のうちに追求した思索小説。
