A freshwater fish of the family Penaeidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). It inhabits various parts of Japan from the central to southern parts, and in western Japan it has various local names (Gouso, Donkuro, Dorobo, etc.). It is also confused with other species (Kajika in Maebashi, Isoainame in Choshi). The body is nearly cylindrical, but the head is flattened and extremely wide, with a large mouth. It reaches a total length of 25 cm. The body color varies depending on the habitat, from yellowish brown to blackish brown, and there are clear cloud-shaped markings on the sides of the body. The pelvic fins are divided into left and right, and do not form suckers.

スズキ目カワアナゴ科の淡水魚（イラスト）。日本では中部以南の各地に生息し，西日本では種々の地方名(ゴウソ，ドンクロ，ドロボウなど)をもっている。また，他の種との混同(前橋でカジカ，銚子でイソアイナメ)もある。体は円筒形に近いが頭は扁平で著しく幅広く口も大きい。全長25cmに達する。体色は生息するところによって異なり黄褐色から黒褐色で，体側の雲形斑紋が明りょうである。腹びれは左右に分かれ，吸盤を形成しない。
