Shokanbetsu-dake

Japanese: 暑寒別岳 - しょかんべつだけ

This mountain is located in the center of the Mashike Mountains in western Hokkaido. It is 1,491 meters above sea level. It is made of Quaternary volcanic rocks, and the mountain is undergoing erosion. Along with the surrounding Mt. Ofuyu, Mt. Hamamasu, and Mt. Gunbetsu, it is part of the Shokanbetsu Volcano Group, and is characterized by andesite containing biotite and amphibole. On the lava plateau east of Mt. Shokanbetsu is a vast high-altitude marsh called Uryu Numa Shitsugen, which is rich in plants such as Japanese sedge and cranberry, and forms a hidden region on a par with Oze. The area is part of the Shokanbetsu-Teuri-Yagishiri Quasi-National Park, and the plant community is designated as a natural monument of Hokkaido. The Uryu Numa Shitsugen was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in 2005.

Japanese:

北海道西部、増毛山地(ましけさんち)の中央にある山。標高1491メートル。第四紀の火山岩類からなり、山体は侵食が進んでいる。周辺の雄冬(おふゆ)山、浜益(はまます)岳、群別(ぐんべつ)岳などとともに暑寒別火山群を構成し、黒雲母(くろうんも)、角閃(かくせん)石を含む安山岩類が特徴。暑寒別岳東方の溶岩台地には雨竜沼湿原(うりゅうぬましつげん)とよばれる広大な高層湿原があり、ホロムイスゲ、ツルコケモモなどの植物が豊富で、尾瀬(おぜ)と並ぶ秘境を形成する。一帯は暑寒別天売焼尻国定公園域で、植物群は北海道の天然記念物に指定されている。なお、雨竜沼湿原は2005年（平成17）に、ラムサール条約登録湿地となった。
