Japanese: ミミズク(木菟) - ミミズク

Among birds of the order Strigiformes, those with tufts (ear-like crests) are generally called horned owls, to distinguish them from owls without tufts. However, this distinction has no taxonomic basis, and there are also examples such as the Japanese spotted owl, which is called an owl even though it has no tufts, and the Japanese spotted owl, which is called an owl even though it has tufts. There are six species of Japanese owls that are called horned owls or owls: the eagle owl, the long-eared owl, the short-eared owl, the scops owl, the great scops owl, and the Japanese horned owl.

フクロウ目の鳥のうち，一般に羽角(外耳状の羽冠)のあるものをミミズクと呼び，羽角のないフクロウと区別する。しかし，この区別は分類学的な根拠のあるものではなく，またアオバズクのように羽角がないのにズクの名をもつものや，反対に羽角があるのにフクロウの名があるシマフクロウのような例もある。日本産のフクロウ目の鳥でミミズクまたはズクの名のつくものは，ワシミミズク，トラフズク，コミミズク，コノハズク，オオコノハズク，アオバズクの6種である。
