This book was written by Xu Hongzu (1586-1641) of the late Ming Dynasty in China. Xu Hongzu's pen name was Xia Ke and his literary name was Zhenzhi. He was born in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province. His family had produced many generations of government officials, but after failing the imperial examinations once, he devoted himself to reading, and was particularly interested in geography books. However, he was not satisfied with the traditional academic studies that were limited to desk-based interpretations of the words and phrases of classics, and in an attempt to observe nature with his own eyes, he began traveling at the age of 22. In the 30 years until he was 55, the year before his death, he traveled to almost all of China, except for the 14 provinces that were then in the northeast, the Western Regions, Sichuan, and Tibet.
