Located in Katsuta County in the northeastern part of Okayama Prefecture, this old town occupies part of the Tsuyama Basin and the northern mountain range. The bottom of the basin is paddy fields, and there are remains of the jori system. A local wind called Hirotokaze blows during the rice ripening season, causing much damage to crops. Farmers have forests on their premises to the north and west. They grow rice, wheat, dairy farming, and livestock. The northern area is part of Hyonosen-Ushiroyamanagisan Quasi-National Park. In February 2005, it was incorporated into Tsuyama City along with Kume Town in Kume County, Kamo Town in Tomata County, and Awa Village. 44.90 km2 . Population 7,523 (2003). 岡山県北東部,勝田郡にあり,津山盆地の一部と北部山地を占める旧町。盆地底は水田で,条里制遺構がある。イネの成熟期に局地風の広戸風(ひろとかぜ)が吹き農作物の被害が多い。農家は北と西に屋敷林をもつ。米麦作,酪農・畜産を行う。北部一帯は氷ノ山後山那岐山(ひょうのせんうしろやまなぎさん)国定公園に属する。2005年2月久米郡久米町,苫田郡加茂町,阿波村と津山市へ編入。44.90km2。7523人(2003)。
