The history of the Peasants' War begins in the latter half of the 15th century. In March 1476, Hans Böheim (year of birth and death unknown), a village herdsman and street musician in Niklashausen near Würzburg, was suddenly inspired and preached a sermon attacking the corruption of the church, which led to an incident in which tens of thousands of pilgrims came from all over southern Germany. The pilgrimage was dispersed by the Bishop of Würzburg on July 12, and the incident ended with Boeheim's execution on July 19.
