Amount of information

It is an objective quantitative expression of the amount of information contained in a message when it is received. Hartley (Ralph Vinton Lyon Hartley 1888-1970) defined the amount of information as the logarithm of the number of uncertainties. In other words, when there are K types of characters, he defined the amount of information of one character as log K. Therefore, the amount of information of a message of length n is n log K. Shannon (Claude Elwood Shannon 1916-2001) introduced the probability of occurrence of characters and defined the amount of information of one character as entropy.
