1873‐1933
Italian naval officer, mountaineer, and explorer. A member of the Italian royal Savoy family, he became a naval officer and was active in a wide range of areas, from mountaineering to exploration, from the Alps to the Himalayas, the Andes, and the Polar Regions. His major activities include the first ascent of St. Elias in Alaska (1897) and the first ascent of Ruwenzori in East Africa (1906). He is also known for his large-scale trial ascent of K ₂ , the second highest mountain in the world (1909). In 1899-1900, he attempted to reach the North Pole. It is said that he was the first to use polar methods of mountaineering.

イタリアの海軍軍人，登山家，探検家。イタリアの王家サボイア家系の貴族で，海軍軍人となり，登山から探検まで，場所もアルプスからヒマラヤ，アンデス，極地に至る幅広い活躍をした。おもな活動にはアラスカのセント･エライアス初登頂(1897)，東アフリカのルウェンゾリ初登頂(1906)があり，世界第2の高峰K₂に大規模な試登(1909)を行ったことでも知られる。1899‐1900年には北極点を目ざした。登山の極地法はこのとき彼が用いたのが最初とされる。
