Born: August 25, 1896 in Tokyo [Died] October 25, 1963. Businessman, politician, and folklorist. Born as the eldest son of Viscount Shibusawa Atsuji, grandson of Shibusawa Eiichi. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1921. Joined the Yokohama Specie Bank, and in the same year opened the Attic Museum in his home, where he began collecting and researching local toys. In 1926 he moved to Daiichi Bank, which was founded by his grandfather, and in 1942 became Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan, becoming Governor in 1944. In 1945 he became Minister of Finance in the Shidehara Cabinet, and worked to combat inflation immediately after World War II. He was banned from holding public office, but after his ban was lifted in 1951 he played an active role in the business world, including as President of International Telegraph and Telephone Company. He also continued to actively study folklore and ethnology, which he had been doing since before the war, widely publishing the results of his research. He founded the Japanese Ethnological Association (now the Shibusawa Ethnology Promotion Fund and the Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology) and served as its president. After the war, he organized the Alliance of Six Societies (now the Alliance of Nine Societies), advocating the need for a wide range of interdisciplinary collaboration in the humanities. Many of the folk implements he collected are currently housed at the National Museum of Ethnology. His main works include "Materials on the Fishermen of Mameshu Uchiura," "Collection of Japanese Fish Names," and "Meiji Cultural History."
