A city in the state of Queensland in eastern Australia. It is 660 km (by road) north of the state capital, Brisbane. Population: 58,382 (2001). It is located 60 km upstream from the mouth of the Fitzroy River, with a port near the mouth of the river. With agricultural areas, mainly beef cattle breeding, and inland mines as its hinterland, it has developed as the central city in the central east coast of the state. It has various industries, including meat processing. It is one of the tourist bases for the Great Barrier Reef. Settled in 1855, and incorporated as a city in 1919.
