Rockhampton - Rockhampton (English spelling)

A city in the state of Queensland in eastern Australia. It is 660 km (by road) north of the state capital, Brisbane. Population: 58,382 (2001). It is located 60 km upstream from the mouth of the Fitzroy River, with a port near the mouth of the river. With agricultural areas, mainly beef cattle breeding, and inland mines as its hinterland, it has developed as the central city in the central east coast of the state. It has various industries, including meat processing. It is one of the tourist bases for the Great Barrier Reef. Settled in 1855, and incorporated as a city in 1919.

オーストラリア東部、クイーンズランド州の都市。州都ブリズベンの北660キロメートル（道路距離）にある。人口5万8382（2001）。フィッツロイ川の河口から60キロメートル上流に位置し、河口付近に港をもつ。肉牛飼育を中心とする農牧地帯や内陸の鉱山を後背地に、同州東海岸中部の中心都市として発展してきた。食肉加工はじめ各種工業がある。グレート・バリア・リーフ（大堡礁(だいほしょう)）の観光基地の一つ。1855年入植、1919年市制施行。
