A marine animal belonging to the family Isocaeidae, order Polychaeta, class Annelida. It is widely distributed in shallow seas throughout Japan. It is named after the fact that many of them hide in the crevices of rocks, but they also live in sand and mud. Their physical constitution, such as their body color, varies slightly depending on the environment. They are used as fishing bait in various places, so they are called akamushi, iwaisome, emushi, honmushi, isobe, doromushi, etc. depending on the region, and have more than 20 other names. They are 30 to 50 centimeters long and reddish brown. The front part is round, but the dorsoventrally becomes flatter toward the rear. Gills appear on both sides of the body from around the 30th segment, and at first there is only one, but 4 to 5 thread-like gill filaments increase to it, and they become like the teeth of a comb. They are a good bait for fishing for red sea bream, marbled flounder, sea bass, wrasse, conger eel, whiting, and grunt. In recent years, live and salted insects have been imported from Taiwan, the Philippines, South Korea and other countries for use as fishing bait.
