Castle guard - Joban
|
During the Edo period, one of the samurai occupations. Also called the Banteshu or Zaibanshu, they served under the castle lord and guarded the castle's gates and turrets from the Sengoku period onwards. There were regular officers who served for a set period of time and additional officers who filled in when there were shortages of personnel. 江戸時代，武家職制の一つ。番手衆，在番衆とも呼ばれ，戦国時代以降，城代のもとにあって城の門櫓を警衛した。一定期間勤める定番と，人数不足を補う加番とがあった。
