A region in southern Italy facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. It stretches from the Gulf of Gaeta to the Gulf of Policastro, with the Apennine Mountains running inland and Mount Vesuvius towering over it. It includes the Campania Plain, known since ancient times as a fertile land, producing wheat, corn, olives, grapes, and other crops, and fishing is also thriving. It is the region with the most developed industry in southern Italy, with its capital, Naples. In ancient Roman times, cities such as Pompeii and Capua flourished, and from the 12th century it flourished as part of the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of Naples, but after Italian unification it has suffered from a "north-south gap" and has stagnated. 13,595 km2 . 5,766,810 people (2011). →Mezzogiorno→Related article Amalfi Coast Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
