A magazine aimed at young readers. First published in January 1895, ceased publication in October 1933. Published by Hakubunkan. Taking advantage of the times after the First Sino-Japanese War, this bi-monthly magazine was launched by integrating several magazines and series that Hakubunkan had been publishing up until that point. At the time, Iwaya Sazanami, who was attracting attention as a new talent at Kenyusha and had written Koganemaru, said to be the beginning of boys' literature, was brought in as chief editor. Sazanami also served as chief editor for the subsequent publications Yonnen Sekai (first published in 1900), Yonnen Gaho (first published in 1906), and Shojo Sekai (first published in 1906), and was active as an editor of children's magazines and as a fairy tale writer on the stage of these magazines, but her main focus seems to have been on Shonen Sekai.
