It originates in the Chota Nagpur Plateau in the state of Bihar, India, flows eastward, joins the Hooghly, a branch of the Ganges, and empties into the Bay of Bengal 48 km south of Calcutta. It is 541 km long and has a drainage basin of 12,000 km2. It is one of the smallest rivers in the Indian subcontinent, but is well known for the Dāmodar Valley Corporation (DVC), which began in 1948. The basin was originally badly devastated, and frequent severe soil erosion and flooding occurred during the monsoon season, leading to it being called the "tragic river."
