…American philosopher. Born in Poultney, Vermont, he studied at Princeton and Harvard universities, and taught at Harvard from 1902 to 1946. He is also a researcher of American intellectual history, and is particularly an authority on W. James, and is well known as the author of The Thought and Character of William James, 2 volumes (1935, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1936). Perry's philosophical position is what he calls "neo-realism," which argues that the entities investigated in logic, mathematics, and the natural sciences are not mental, but exist independently of the perceiving mind, and that their reality does not depend at all on how they are perceived. …
