A eunuch under Theodosius II. In 441, he overthrew Cyrus, the powerful man of the time, and succeeded in eliminating the influence of his sister Pulcheria and others, after which he wielded real power in the Eastern Roman government. He sought to pay tribute to the Huns, but in 449 he plotted to assassinate King Attila. The plan was discovered, but Attila, who had already turned his attention to the West, agreed to a peace treaty the following year. In religious matters, he supported the Monophysite Eutyches, and in 449 he persuaded the emperor to hold a council in Ephesus that recognized Eutyches's teachings as orthodox (the Council of Robbers).

テオドシウス2世治下の宦官。441年，時の実力者キュロスを失脚させ，皇姉プルケリアらの影響力排除にも成功した後，東ローマ政府で実権を振るう。フンに対しては貢納金支払いの策をとったが，449年アッティラ王暗殺をたくらむ。計画は露見したが，すでに西方へ関心を移していたアッティラは，翌年和議に同意した。宗教問題では単性論のエウテュケスを支持し，449年皇帝を動かしてエフェソスに公会議を開かせ，エウテュケスの説を正統と認めさせた(盗賊教会会議)。
