A perennial plant of the Apocynaceae family (APG classification: Apocynaceae). The stem is upright and 40-80 cm tall. The leaves are lanceolate and usually alternate, but some grow opposite each other. In early summer, a dozen or so bluish-purple flowers grow in a cymes at the top of the stem. The flowers are high-pitched, thin tubes with five lobes at the end, about 1.3 cm in diameter. The fruits are cylindrical capsules, often divided into two horn-shaped lobes, about 5 cm long. They grow in slightly moist grasslands in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and are distributed in the Korean Peninsula and China. The name comes from the resemblance of the flower shape to the fragrant clove plant. [Yamazaki Takashi June 21, 2021] The stems are upright and the leaves are lanceolate.
