Dakota

...the Dakota are a people who originally lived in the forests of the western Great Lakes region, but as the fur trade with Europeans became more active during the colonial period and around the time of the independence of the United States, they moved westward with the Ojibwe and French from the east, and some of them moved westward into the Great Plains region.
