Sarcophyton elegans (English name)

Japanese: ヒラウミキノコ（英語表記）Sarcophyton elegans

A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Alcyonidae in the class Anthozoa. It is found in shallow waters and is widely distributed from the Kii Peninsula south to the coral reefs of the South Pacific Ocean. The colony is mushroom-shaped, with a crown of about 20 cm in diameter on a short stalk about 5 to 6 cm in diameter, and is light gray or dirty brown in color. The center of the crown is depressed, and the edges are pleated. There are two types of polyps: common members and tubular members. Each member usually has eight pairs of pinnate twigs, which are 5 mm long when fully elongated, and are distributed on the crown at intervals of 2 to 8 mm.

花虫綱ウミトサカ科の腔腸動物(刺胞動物)。紀伊半島以南から南太平洋のサンゴ礁地方に広く分布し，浅海に産する。群体はキノコ状で，直径5～6cmほどの短い柄部の上に，直径20cm内外の冠部が広がり，全体は淡灰色や汚褐色。冠部の中央部はくぼみ，縁がひだ状になっている。ポリプには通状個員と管状個員との2型が見られる。通常個員は8対の羽状小枝をもち，よくのびると長さが5mmになり，冠部上に2～8mm間隔で分布する。
