A breed of dairy cattle. It has been bred and improved since ancient times in the Netherlands and the Holstein region of Germany. Females are large, weighing about 650 kg, and have black and white spotted coats. They produce a lot of milk, about 6,300 kg per year, but the milk fat content is low at 3.8%. Those in the UK are called Friesians and are somewhat smaller. They are suitable for drinking milk and as an ingredient in cheese. They are widely distributed in dairy countries around the world, and account for the majority of dairy cattle in Japan. → Related topics Cattle (cows) | Jersey [breed] | Holstein Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
