Nitrate of lead. It is obtained by dissolving lead oxide (II) PbO, lead white Pb(OH) 2.2PbCO3 or metallic lead in nitric acid. It is a colorless crystal. It decomposes to lead oxide (II) and nitrogen dioxide at temperatures above 470°C. It is hardly soluble in concentrated nitric acid. It is soluble in water. Lead hydroxide (II) is precipitated by alkali hydroxide, but if it dissolves in excess it becomes zincate. It is used as a raw material for making pigments, matches, explosives, preservatives, astringents, dyes, and reagents.
