An industrial city in the Catalonia region in northeastern Spain. Located about 33 km northwest of Barcelona, it is one of the city's satellite cities. It has a population of 173,775 (2001). Since the 18th century, it has developed as a center of the textile industry, mainly woolen textiles, drawing in labor from Andalusia and Aragon. It is located on a plateau 277 meters above sea level, and below the old town is a new town that was planned by separating the residential and industrial areas. Electrical and mechanical industries are also based in the city, utilizing hydroelectric power from the Ebro River basin. Originating from the ancient Roman town of Egara, it is home to the churches of San Miguel and San Pedro, both rebuilt around the 9th century, and the Romanesque Santa Maria Church. The Biosca Museum is known for its textile collection. [Yutaka Tanabe and Yumiko Takizawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
