Germanic hereditary land ownership, especially the cultivated land and the house grounds. In Old Norse, óðal, in Anglo-Saxon, êðel. The Old Germanic peoples were independent business entities that settled and defended themselves, and originally all the houses and cultivated land that were thus used, owned, and defended were odal (Latin allodium). Eventually, due to family divisions, a relative shortage of land, and sales, odal ownership became limited to the upper classes of society and was distinguished from tenant farmers and peasants who bought the land.
