A town in northern Albania, near the border with Yugoslavia, facing Lake Skodar and the Buna River. Capital of the prefecture of the same name. Population 82,000 (1990). Formerly known as Skutari. Named after the ancient Illyrian city of Scodra, it was a key transportation hub during the Roman Empire. From the 6th century onwards, it became a Slavic settlement, and was ruled by the Byzantine Empire, the Kingdom of Serbia, Venice, and the Ottoman Turks, before becoming part of Albania in 1914. アルバニア北部,ユーゴスラビアとの国境に近く,シュコダル湖とブナ川に臨む町。同名県の県都。人口8万2000(1990)。旧名スクタリSkutari。イリュリア人の建てた古代都市スコドラScodraに由来し,ローマ帝国時代の交通の要衝。6世紀以降スラブ人の居住地となり,ビザンティン帝国,セルビア王国,ベネチア,オスマン・トルコに支配され,1914年にアルバニア領となった。アルバニア北部の商業中心地で,羊毛加工・皮革・セメント工場がある。
