Japanese: 攘夷論 - じょういろん

A feudalistic anti-foreign ideology that was influential in the late Edo period. It was opposed to the idea of opening up the country. It was based on the Confucian idea of Sino-Yi, and in the face of the real threat of foreign powers, it fused with the idea of revering the emperor and the idea of a divine nation in Kokugaku. Especially after the opening of the ports, it became the ideological backbone of anti-shogunate forces, with the slogan of opposing the shogunate's conclusion of treaties. It was typically seen in the later Mito school of thought, and was carried over to the Sonno-Joi movement. The Sonno-Joi faction gradually shifted to a more active opening up of the country in the 1860s, but the idea of expelling the barbarians itself remained until the beginning of the Meiji period, and even became a slogan for samurai rebellions.

幕末に勢力をもった封建的排外思想。開国論に対する。儒学の華夷思想を素地とし，現実の外国勢力の脅威下で尊王論や国学の神国思想と癒着し，特に開港以降は幕府の条約締結反対をスローガンとする反幕勢力の思想的支柱となった。後期水戸学等に典型的に現れ，尊王攘夷運動に引き継がれた。尊攘派は1860年代に入ると次第に積極的開国に転じていくが，攘夷論自体は明治初年まで残存し，士族反乱のスローガンともなった。
