A feudalistic anti-foreign ideology that was influential in the late Edo period. It was opposed to the idea of opening up the country. It was based on the Confucian idea of Sino-Yi, and in the face of the real threat of foreign powers, it fused with the idea of revering the emperor and the idea of a divine nation in Kokugaku. Especially after the opening of the ports, it became the ideological backbone of anti-shogunate forces, with the slogan of opposing the shogunate's conclusion of treaties. It was typically seen in the later Mito school of thought, and was carried over to the Sonno-Joi movement. The Sonno-Joi faction gradually shifted to a more active opening up of the country in the 1860s, but the idea of expelling the barbarians itself remained until the beginning of the Meiji period, and even became a slogan for samurai rebellions. → Related topics: Naval Defense | Official Batavia Newspaper | Black Ships | Anglo-Satsuma War | Tokugawa Nariaki | Meiji Restoration Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
