Born: November 10, 1728. Pallas [died] 4 April 1774, London. Born in Ireland, he was a member of the literary club led by S. Johnson. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, he wandered about in poverty, and then moved to London to begin his life as a writer. He gained recognition for his essay The Citizen of the World (1762), which satirised the state of society from a Chinese perspective, and his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (66), which depicts a good-natured country clergyman and his family. He also wrote plays, and his comedy The Good-Natured Man (68) was followed by She Stoops to Conquer (73), which is known as a representative 18th century comedy. His long poem The Traveller (64) and The Deserted Village (70), which sings of the desolation of rural areas, are also famous.
