Italian art historian. Born in Modena in northern Italy. He served as director of the Modena Art Gallery, later became a professor at the University of Rome, and also founded Italy's largest art magazine, L'Arte. He has written books about the great masters of Renaissance art, but his greatest achievement was writing the 25-volume series "History of Italian Art" (1901-40). His son, Lionello Venturi (1885-1961), succeeded him. He studied at the University of Rome and later taught at the University of Turin, but was pursued by the Fascists and fled to France and then to the United States. After the war, he returned to Rome and became a professor. In addition to Renaissance art, he also conducted research on impressionist and contemporary art. His works that have been translated into Japanese include "Modern Painters" (1941), "Introduction to Painting Appreciation" (1948), and "Modern Painting," as well as "History of Art Criticism" (1945), which shows the influence of Croce.
