Fosterage

Japanese: fosterage
Fosterage

...In Okinawa and mainland Japan, there are cases of "adopted son-in-law" and in the Minangkabau society of Sumatra, there are cases of "adopted bride-law" in which a person of marriageable age is adopted, and in the East Torres Strait Islanders, there are cases where a child is adopted in advance. Adoption by adoption refers to a case involving a permanent transfer, and is conceptually distinct from "fostered child" by temporary care, and the practice of parent-child relationships based on temporary care and therefore with an element of the possibility of returning to a "real parent-child relationship" is called "fosterage." This practice is common throughout Oceania, but there are cases where people do not clearly distinguish between adoption and care.
