Born: circa 1554, Kent [Died] November 1606, London. British novelist and playwright. Born into a family of scholars, he studied at Oxford University and acquired a humanistic education. He gained popularity with his didactic novels about the education of gentlemen, Euphues, the Anatomy of Wit (1578) and its sequel, Euphues and his England (1580). The skillful style of writing, rich in metaphors and rhetoric, used in these works was called "Euphuism" and had a great influence on the literary world. He also produced elegant comedies in prose, such as Campaspe (1584) and Endimion (1591), aimed at courtiers. He also served as a member of Parliament for a time. Lily |
