[Died] November 1606, London. British novelist and playwright. Born into a family of scholars, he studied at Oxford University and acquired a humanistic education. He gained popularity with his didactic novels about the education of gentlemen, Euphues, the Anatomy of Wit (1578) and its sequel, Euphues and his England (1580). The skillful style of writing, rich in metaphors and rhetoric, used in these works was called "Euphuism" and had a great influence on the literary world. He also produced elegant comedies in prose, such as Campaspe (1584) and Endimion (1591), aimed at courtiers. He also served as a member of Parliament for a time.

English classical scholar and grammarian. After graduating from Oxford University, he traveled throughout southern Europe, during which time he studied Greek. After returning to England, he served as headmaster of St. Paul's School (1512-22). He was a pioneer in Greek studies in England, and was one of the co-authors of a Latin grammar book, "Lily's Grammar," which, although revised many times, was used as a grammar school textbook until the 18th century.

[Died] January 20, 1989. Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. A Canadian-born comedic actress. She made her debut in London in 1914, and performed in London and New York. She appeared in comedies such as Aunt Mame (1958), but was mainly active in revues and cabarets. She gained popularity with her unique acting style and distinctive singing. She is best known for her solo show An Evening with Beatrice Lily, which she began performing in 1952.
