1917‐77 Lebanese politician. In Arabic, he is called Jāmbulāṭ. He is the head of the prestigious Druze Jumblatt family. He studied literature and philosophy in Paris and law in Beirut. He became involved in politics from the mid-1940s, and in 1949 founded the Progressive Socialist Party, which advocated social reform. From 1947 onwards (except for 1957), he was a member of parliament and often a cabinet minister, and occupied an influential position in Lebanese politics.
