French dancer and choreographer. Born in Villemomble near Paris. Graduated at the top of her class at the Paris Opera Ballet School and joined the Paris Opera Ballet. During World War II, she performed with Challah. In 1944, when Paris was liberated, she left the Opera, and in 1945 she founded the Champs-Élysées Ballets, and in 1948 she founded the Paris Ballet. During this period, she choreographed such representative works as La juvenile et mort (1946, Bach), Carmen (1949, Bizet), and Les Wolves (1953, Dutilleux). In 1954, she married Jeanmaire, and from this time she entered the world of show business, choreographing and directing musicals, films, and revues. In 1971, at the invitation of the city of Marseille, she founded the Marseille Laurent Petit Ballet Company, which has been active around the world and has performed in Japan many times, but retired as director in 1998. Other notable works include "Notre Dame de Paris" (1965, music by Maurice Jarre), "Turangalila" (1968, music by Messiaen), "Proust: In Search of Lost Time" (1974, music by Saint-Saëns, R. Petite

French physicist. Professor at the École Polytechnique. He collaborated with Dulong to study the thermal expansion of solids and measured the thermal expansion coefficient of mercury. In 1819, he discovered Dulong–Petit's law.
