Chinese New Year - Dredging

Japanese:
Chinese New Year - Dredging
A 15-day festival held in China and Chinese-speaking countries that begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar on January 1 and ends with the first full moon of the lunar calendar (→ lunar age). It is one of the most important annual events in China, and falls between January 21 and February 20 in the solar calendar. Since the mid-1990s, it has been a 7-day holiday every year. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are traditionally spent with family, with ancestral memorial services and the exchange of gifts (laishi) in red envelopes. One of the origins of the festival is a legend that loud voices, bright lights, and the color red were used to drive away a demon called "nian" that becomes violent at the beginning of the year. Today, it is celebrated with firecrackers and fireworks, red decorations around town, and dragon and lion dances (→ lion dances). On the final day of the festival, colorful lanterns are displayed and traditional foods that are considered auspicious are served. Festivals are held in Chinatowns in Japan and around the world.
