Marmoset

Japanese: キヌザル（英語表記）marmoset

A general term for small New World monkeys belonging to the primate family Callithricidae. They are also called marmosets (illustration). The word marmoset is said to come from an Old French word meaning "small and strange thing." The name marmoset comes from the fact that the scientific name of the genus Callithrix means "silk hair." The classification of the family Marmoset varies among scholars, with 2-5 genera and 20-30 species. The genus Marmoset, the tamarin genus Saguinus , and the lion tamarin genus Leontopithecus are included, and the Guerde monkey is sometimes included at the subfamily level.

霊長目キヌザル科Callithricidaeに属する小型の新世界ザルの総称。マーモセット（イラスト）とも呼ばれる。マーモセットとは古いフランス語の〈小さくて変わったもの〉を意味する語によるという。また，キヌザルの名はマーモセット属の学名Callithrixが絹毛を意味するところからきている。キヌザル科の分類は2～5属，20～30種と学者によってさまざまである。マーモセット属，タマリン属Saguinus，ライオンタマリン属Leontopithecusなどが含まれ，ゲルディモンキーを亜科のレベルで含めることもある。
