An Iranian Sunni Ashari theologian. He is commonly known by the title Imam al-Haramayn (Imperial Master of the Two Holy Cities). His theological system begins with epistemology, then considers the world as a collection of substance and accident, proves the existence of God, discusses the attributes of God, and gradually explains issues such as the relationship between God and the world and the necessity of prophets. He perfected Ashari theology and built the foundation for subsequent research into Sunni theology. Abu Hamid al-Ghazali was his disciple. His main work is Kitāb al-irshād (Right Guidance).
