The Book of Children - Shiteisho (English) zǐ dì shū

Japanese: 子弟書 - していしょ（英語表記）zǐ dì shū

A story told in the Qing dynasty of China. It is said to have originated from the children of the Eight Banners of Manchuria in the late 18th century. It spread from Beijing to Shenyang in the 19th century, and became popular throughout the northeast. It is said to be a seven-syllable verse told to the accompaniment of a sanxian or an octagonal drum. It contains popular novels, traditional dramas, and stories of the everyday life. The melody is divided into the gentle, continuous Xicheng style and the grandiose and fierce Dongcheng style. Perhaps because of its elegance, it fell into decline at the end of the 19th century, but it influenced storytelling in various parts of the north.
