Sully Prudhomme

1839‐1907
French poet. His real name was René-François-Armand Prudhomme. He gained recognition with his first collection of poems, Stances et poèmes (1865), and began contributing to highbrow magazines, but his poems, which deal with inner contemplation such as Les epreuves (1866) and Les solitudes (1869), are essentially different from highbrow poetry. He gradually became more philosophical, eventually composing long philosophical poems such as La justice (1878) and Le bonheur (Happiness) (1888).

フランスの詩人。本名はRené‐François‐Armand Prudhomme。最初の詩集《スタンスと詩Stances et poèmes》(1865)によって認められ，高踏派の雑誌に寄稿するようになるが，《試練Les epreuves》(1866)や《孤独Les solitudes》(1869)など内面的思索を主題とする彼の詩は，高踏派の詩とは本質的に異なる。そしてしだいに哲学的傾向を強め，《正義La justice》(1878)，《幸福Le bonheur》(1888)などの長編の〈哲学詩〉の創作にいたる。
