...But Poland was economically poor and politically dependent at the time, and could not compete with foreign films such as the French Pathé film company, so film production developed slowly. It started to get on track around 1908, and then flourished after 1910, due in large part to the popularity of Barbara Apollonia Karpetz, a new star who later became known in Hollywood as Pola Negri (in the following, proper nouns are often used in the film industry, due to the fact that filmmakers were active outside Poland). The first film studio was built in Warsaw in 1920, two years after Poland regained its independence from Imperial Russia. ...
