A city in Okinawa Prefecture that occupies the entirety of Ishigaki Island and the Senkaku Islands. It was incorporated as a city in 1947. The city developed around Ishigaki Port, and there are pineapple factories and farms run by overseas Chinese, as well as a sugar factory and a shrimp farm. Specialties include Yaeyama Jofu, Yaeyama Kamaboko, and black pearls. A bus road runs around Ishigaki Island, and there are regular flights to Okinawa Island and Miyako Island. The city is home to the Yaeyama palm colony in Maibara (a natural monument), Miyara Donchi Garden (a scenic spot), and the Ishigaki Clan Garden (a scenic spot). The scenic Kabira Bay and other areas are great places for marine sports. In November 2005, Nagura Amparu was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In September 2010, a Chinese fishing boat rammed two Japan Coast Guard patrol boats in Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands, attempting to escape, and the incident became a diplomatic issue. It was once again recognized that the city is located on the border. In September 2012, the government purchased the Senkaku Islands from the landowners and completed the registration of the transfer of ownership to Japan, but China strongly protested, and since then Chinese government vessels, including patrol boats, have repeatedly entered and exited the territorial waters and contiguous zone around the Senkaku Islands, raising tensions. 229.34 km2 . 46,922 people (2005). → Related article Yaeyama Islands Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
