Shreveport (English spelling)
A city in northwestern Louisiana, United States. It is located on the lower Red River. It was named after HM Shreve, who contributed to the improvement of the Red River. It was founded in 1837. It was the capital of the Confederate States of America towards the end of the Civil War. The era of river transportation came to an end with the opening of the railroad in 1900. Then, in 1906, oil fields were discovered, and the city developed rapidly. It is a center of the chemical, petroleum products, glass, and metal industries, as well as cotton trading. It is home to Centennial University of Louisiana (established in 1825) and Louisiana State University at Shreveport (established in 1965). Population: 199,311 (2010).
