An ancient tribe in North India. Around the 6th century BCE, the Malla state was one of the "Sixteen Great States," but during the life of the Buddha, it was divided into two factions, with their capitals in Pāvā and Kusinārā (Kushinagara), respectively. Both states adopted a tribal republic (sangha) system and held meetings in public halls to decide important issues. Kusinārā is also famous as the place where Buddha passed away. The Malla state was destroyed by the neighboring state of Magadha to the south, but the year of its destruction is unclear. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
