During a total solar eclipse (→ total eclipse), just before and after the eclipse, and during an annular eclipse, stripes of light and dark perpendicular to the direction of the Moon's umbra can be seen marching across the Earth. These stripes are called shadow bands. Shadow bands are caused by irregular refraction of light from the remaining part of the Moon by the Earth's atmosphere, just like the twinkling of stars. The stripes are not necessarily regular, and often move around discontinuously. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
