Shuinchi - Shuinchi

Japanese:
Shuinchi - Shuinchi

In the early modern period, this refers to land whose ownership was guaranteed by red seal letters issued by the Toyotomi clan and successive Tokugawa shoguns, and most of these were temple and shrine red seal land. The number of temples and shrines granted red seal land tended to increase until the fourth shogun, Ietsuna, but remained stable thereafter, and owning red seal land became a sign of the status of a temple or shrine. When the kokudaka of the red seal land was large, the temple or shrine directly owned the land by appointing a deputy as the lord and collecting annual taxes and various duties from the farmers on the temple or shrine land, but when the kokudaka of the red seal land was small, the ruling lord of the area exempted them from paying annual taxes and duties on the red seal land.
